About

Twin Buttes is a multi-use trail system located just west of downtown Durango, accessible from Highway 160 and Lightner Creek Road (CR 207). The network spans approximately 14 miles with 11 distinct trails, offering moderate steady climbs and classic single-track terrain. While popular for mountain biking, the system supports hiking, trail running, e-biking, and winter snowshoeing. Most lower trails remain open year-round, but upper sections, including the Buttes Trail and Cliffrock Loop, close for wildlife habitation from December 1 to April 15. The main trailhead features a dirt parking lot near a Speedway gas station on the north side of Highway 160. Hikers can expect views over Durango and the surrounding valley, with conditions that may require attention to footing. The area serves as a birding hotspot, hosting species such as Western and Mountain bluebirds, red-tailed hawks, and Canyon Wrens. Private property signs are present throughout the trek.
