The Upper Twin Buttes Trail is a moderate, multi-use hiking route located just west of downtown Durango on the Western Slope. The trail spans 1.3 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 2,277 feet, leading to a summit at 6,534 feet. Hikers typically complete the out-and-back journey in about one hour. The route features a steady climb through pinion, juniper, and ponderosa trees, transitioning from shaded sections to exposed areas with rocky and dusty surfaces. Parking is available in a dirt lot near the Speedway gas station on Highway 160, with secondary access via Lightner Creek Road. The trail is accessible year-round, though the upper sections close for wildlife habitat from December 1 through April 15. It serves as a birding hotspot, hosting species such as Western and Mountain bluebirds, red-winged and Brewer's blackbirds, red-tailed hawks, and Canyon Wrens. An optional off-trail scramble to the summit offers views from a peak register.
