Yucca House National Monument is a moderate hiking destination located eight miles south of Cortez, Colorado. The site preserves a large unexcavated Ancestral Puebloan village dating from 1150 to 1300. The landscape features piñon pine and juniper trees, along with cacti and rocky terrain. Fall is the primary season for visiting, running from September through November. During this period, daytime temperatures typically range from the 50s to 60s degrees Fahrenheit. Nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing, and early snowstorms are possible in October. Trail conditions remain cool and manageable, with reduced crowds compared to summer months. The total tour time is approximately two to three hours, including orientation and carpooling. Visitors drive on dirt roads through private land to reach the monument. Parking is available at the site. Restrooms are provided for visitor use. The area is pet-friendly, allowing dogs on trails. Hikers should wear long pants and sturdy hiking shoes to navigate the rocky ground and protect against cacti, snakes, and ants. The site offers views of golden aspens, yellow cottonwoods, and red maples during the fall foliage season.
