About

The Sand Canyon Trailhead in the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument provides access to a network of hiking trails near Cortez, Colorado. The trail connects two elevations: a lower trailhead at 5,472 feet off County Road G and an upper trailhead at 6,862 feet off Country Road N. The hike is moderate in difficulty and typically takes about two hours for shorter segments, though the full out-and-back route spans 13 miles. The primary feature is a high concentration of Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites, with over 6,000 recorded ruins scattered along the path. Hikers traverse sandy washes and rocky terrain with constant exposure to sun, particularly in summer. A distinct 4.5-mile mark features a steep 700-foot climb with 30 switchbacks leading to the upper trailhead and Sand Canyon Pueblo. Parking is available at both ends, and the area is pet-friendly. The trail remains open year-round, requiring preparation for winter snow and ice or summer heat.
