The Lee and Grease fires were discovered on August 2nd as lightning strikes on Bureau of Land Management managed land in the Piceance Creek area. The Lee and Grease fires quickly met to be known exclusively as the Lee fire. Drought with severe and extreme weather conditions along with multiple days of red flag warnings and heightened fire activity, the Lee fire grew over 100,000 acres in eight days. Firefighters have been working to find areas of opportunity in the southern area of the fire to reduce spread.
