Grand Junction, CO - The Grand Junction Police Department responded to two separate domestic violence incidents and arrested two individuals on July 26, 2026.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. on July 26, 2026, officers were dispatched to an assault in progress in the 3100 block of Platte River Drive.
Officers determined a verbal dispute occurred between an adult male and a female known to him. The dispute had escalated when the male assaulted and strangled the female in the presence of a juvenile. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the male, identified as Gary Kiefer, 47.
Kiefer was later contacted and arrested, where he was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on charges of:
Second Degree Assault with Intent to Cause Serious Bodily Injury by Strangulation
Felony Menacing
Third Degree Assault
On July 25, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., officers with the Grand Junction Police Department were dispatched to a possible assault in a hotel located on the 700 block of Horizon Drive.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a male and female had been involved in a verbal dispute, and that the two had separated. Officers responded again on July 26, 2026, at approximately 1:20 a.m., after receiving reports that people had been arguing in the same room. Officers were unable to establish probable cause for criminal charges at either time.
At approximately 8:40 a.m. on July 26, 2026, officers were dispatched to a call involving the same male and female. Through investigation, officers determined the ongoing domestic dispute between the male and female had escalated into a physical altercation when the male assaulted and strangled the female. When the female made attempts to notify law enforcement or leave, the male threatened that he would kill her dog.
Based on available evidence, officers were able to develop probable cause to arrest the male, 55-year-old Joseph Kilwein. Kilwein was later contacted and taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on the following charges:
Habitual Domestic Violence Offender
Assault in the Third Degree
False Imprisonment
Intimidating a Witness of a Victim
