Grand Junction, CO – On September 6, 2026, at approximately 3:20 a.m., officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to the 1200 block of Houston Walk for a report of a possible domestic dispute.
Officers arrived on scene and learned two students from Colorado Mesa University (CMU) were involved in a verbal domestic dispute. During the initial contact, officers did not establish probable cause for criminal charges. At approximately 5:40 p.m., officers received additional information regarding the incident, prompting further investigation.
During the course of the investigation, officers determined the male had been allowed into the dorm and entered the female’s room without her consent. A verbal dispute resulted in a physical altercation in which the male took the female’s phone, preventing her from calling police. The female’s roommates awoke during the altercation and entered the room, prompting the male to leave.
Officers developed probable cause to arrest the male, identified as 18-year-old Derick Sievertsen. Officers also had reason to believe Sievertsen had access to a firearm on school campus, and a search warrant was granted. During the search, officers found a gun, suspected cocaine, alcohol, and identification cards bearing the name of another person among Sievertsen’s property.
Sievertsen was arrested and transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility, where he was booked on the following charges:
1st Degree Criminal Trespass of Inhabited Dwelling
Obstruction of Telephone or Telegraph Service
Weapon Possess School – Firearm
Minor in Possession of Alcohol
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
Criminal Possession ID Document
Possession of Schedule I/II Controlled Substance
Domestic Violence
This is believed to be an isolated incident with no ongoing danger to the community. The Grand Junction Police Department worked closely with CMU administration, and according to campus officials, the former student was suspended immediately. This investigation remains ongoing, and there is no additional information available at this time.
