National Safety Month: Simple Steps for a Safer Summer

June is National Safety Month, a great reminder that small actions can prevent serious injuries and save lives. As summer activities increase, a few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safe.

Wear a Helmet

Whether you're riding a bicycle, e-bike, skateboard, scooter, motorcycle, or ATV, a properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries. Helmets should sit level on the head and be secured snugly under the chin. Remember: a helmet only works when it's worn.

Stay Safe Around Water

Swimming, boating, and spending time near rivers, lakes, and pools are popular summer activities. Always supervise children around water, wear a life jacket when boating or participating in water sports, and avoid swimming alone. Even experienced swimmers can encounter unexpected hazards.

Beat the Heat

Hot weather can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially during outdoor work or recreation. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, take breaks in the shade, wear lightweight clothing, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Ride ATVs Responsibly

ATVs are powerful vehicles that require skill and attention to operate safely. Wear a helmet and other protective gear, follow manufacturer age recommendations, avoid carrying extra passengers unless the ATV is designed for them, and never operate an ATV under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Store Firearms Securely

Safe firearm storage helps prevent unintentional injuries, theft, and unauthorized access by children or visitors. Store firearms unloaded and secured in a locked case, safe, or lockbox, with ammunition stored separately whenever possible.

Delta County Public Health currently offers free firearm storage cases to community members while supplies last. These cases provide a simple way to add an extra layer of safety in the home. Contact Delta County Public Health for more information.

A safe summer starts with simple choices. By taking a few precautions, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your community while enjoying everything the season has to offer.
