Standing on the grounds of the Aspen Golf Club, the sound of golf balls being driven into the distance and the murmur of conversation from the restaurant and bar fill the air. The sun casts a warm glow over the manicured greens, a stark contrast to the outdated facilities that lie beneath the surface. As the city of Aspen moves forward with its new Facilities Master Plan, the results of a recent survey are shedding light on what the community wants to see prioritized in the upgrades.

The survey, which received 534 responses from locals and visitors alike, highlights the importance of the Aspen Golf Club as a social hub and community campus. On paper, the numbers tell a story of a facility that is well-loved but in need of significant investment. 92% of respondents reported using the facilities in the past year, with the top uses being the restaurant and bar, golf, and summer activities. However, when asked to rate their overall experience, the average rating was a 3.8 out of 5, with 2.8% rating it a 1, indicating a significant portion of users are not satisfied with the current state of the facilities.

Let's do the math: 64.4% of respondents were Aspen locals, which translates to around 343 individuals who have a vested interest in seeing the facilities improved. The city has contracted with DTJ Design to create a roadmap for the future, aiming to address the pressure on the infrastructure and amenities that has built up over decades of use. In practice, this means that any upgrades will need to balance the needs of various user groups, from golfers to Nordic skiers, and provide a welcoming space for the community to gather.

The top priorities reported by respondents were an expanded restaurant and bar, improved golf practice facilities, and a larger outdoor space with sunset views. These priorities reflect the community's desire for a more modern and functional facility that can accommodate a range of activities and events. However, lower-ranked priorities, such as improved locker rooms and golf cart storage, should not be overlooked, as they are crucial for providing a positive user experience.

For context, this facility is not just a golf course; it's a shared civic space that serves as a hub for community activity. 62.5% of respondents stated that it's very important for the facility to be a year-round gathering place, highlighting the need for upgrades that can accommodate a range of seasonal activities. The city will need to consider how to balance the needs of different user groups and provide a space that is welcoming and accessible to all.

In terms of specific numbers, the survey results show that 72% of respondents use the restaurant and bar, 65% use the golf facilities, and 59% use the facilities during the summer months. These numbers demonstrate the importance of providing amenities that can support a range of activities and events. However, the survey also highlights the need for improved facilities, with 25.1% of respondents rating their overall experience as a 3, indicating a neutral or mediocre experience.

The practical bottom line is that any upgrades will need to be carefully considered to ensure they meet the community's needs. With a significant portion of respondents indicating that the current setup is outdated, inefficient, and disconnected, the city will need to prioritize upgrades that address these concerns while also providing a welcoming and accessible space for all users. The cost of these upgrades is not yet clear, but it's likely to be substantial, and the city will need to carefully weigh the costs and benefits of any proposed changes. For locals, the outcome of this process will have a direct impact on their ability to access and enjoy community facilities, and their voices must be heard throughout the planning process.
