The Battle Mountain girls lacrosse team continues their undefeated streak with recent wins over Denver East and Aspen, demonstrating strong defensive and offensive performances.

The Battle Mountain girls lacrosse team, currently ranked No. 1, remains undefeated after securing an 11-8 road win over Denver East on Saturday and a 19-5 victory over No. 7 Aspen on Monday in Edwards. As the team approaches the end of the regular season, they are one game away from achieving an undefeated record for the second time in three years.
According to head coach Mat Ballay, the team's win over Aspen was marked by a strong defensive performance, with the Huskies limiting the Angels to just three first-half goals. "So, we had to play a lot of defense before we could get an offensive possession," Ballay stated, highlighting the challenges the team faced in securing draws, going just 7-for-23 at midfield.
The senior-heavy squad, however, picked up the slack elsewhere, with players like Sophia Erving, Brynlee Smith, and Lindsay Wadey contributing to a swarming defense. Ballay credited their efforts, saying, "The defense did a phenomenal job of providing the offense with opportunities." The team also forced nine turnovers, and goaltenders Huntley Blue and Hallie Holleman had four and six saves in the net, respectively.
On offense, the Huskies saw strong performances from several players, including Isabel Thomas, who led the team with four goals against Aspen. Kate Kovacik scored two goals and tallied two assists, while Caroline Provenzer and Isabelle Adochio also scored twice. As Ballay noted, "Our efficiency on offense was the best we've had all season."
The team's success can be attributed to their ability to adapt and overcome challenges. Despite struggling with draws, they were able to capitalize on their defensive strengths and create scoring opportunities. Ballay's strategy is focused on continuing to improve and prepare for the challenges ahead.
The question is whether the team can maintain their momentum and continue to perform at a high level. With their senior-heavy squad and strong dynamics, they appear to be well-positioned for success. As Ballay puts it, the focus is on taking it one game at a time and making adjustments as needed.
Their winning record and strong performances have drawn attention from fans and opponents alike, and the community is taking notice. In the context of the Western Slope, the Battle Mountain girls lacrosse team's success is a source of pride for the community, reflecting the region's growing reputation for producing talented and competitive teams. Folks around here know that the team's achievements are not just a reflection of their own hard work and dedication.
As they look to the future, the Huskies are aware of the challenges that lie ahead. The playoffs will bring tougher competition, and they will need to be at the top of their game if they hope to succeed. But for now, they are focused on enjoying their success and preparing for the next step. As Ballay said, "We're just taking it one game at a time and trying to improve with each performance."
The community will be watching with interest as the season unfolds. With strong team dynamics and talented players, the Huskies are well-positioned to make a deep run in the playoffs. As Ballay noted, "It's great to have such a strong community behind us, and we're grateful for their support."
