DJ Logic Fronts Bluegrass Pre-Party Ahead of Avon Festival

Aspen —DJ Logic is playing bluegrass in Vail this Thursday.

The New York City turntablist, known for fusing jazz and hip-hop over decades of career, is fronting a lineup at Agave that includes Rapid Grass, Skin the Rabbit, and Blue Ox Boys. The event serves as a pre-party for the FreeFall Bluegrass Festival, which moves to Avon next month.

It’s a strange pairing on paper. Logic is currently touring with the Miles Electric Band to honor Miles Davis’ 100th birthday, a project that leans heavily into jazz fusion. But he has a long history with the bluegrass world, collaborating with acts like Green Sky Bluegrass and String Cheese Incident.

“He literally made some phone calls and has gathered quite a group of talented folks to play at Agave on Thursday,” said Diane Moudy, the organizer from Resort Entertainment. “He just bounces from one genre to another.”

The main festival, the FreeFall Bluegrass Festival, takes over Harry A. Nottingham Park in Avon from Oct. 9 to 11. It is the first time the event has been hosted in Avon, having previously taken place in Vail. The headliners are significant: Railroad Earth, Molly Tuttle, and the Bluegrass Generals.

Moudy is vocal about her enthusiasm for the lineup. She points to Tuttle, a Grammy Award-winning guitarist who learned her instrument from Billy Strings and recently married Katch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show. “I just love everything Molly Tuttle does,” Moudy said. “She’s just a great human being.”

Railroad Earth is celebrating its 25th anniversary during the run. Moudy noted she has worked with the band frequently, citing strong personal connections within the group. The Bluegrass Generals act as a bridge between scenes, blending members of Infamous String Dusters with Paul Hoffman from Green Sky Bluegrass and Bill Nershi from String Cheese Incident.

The festival features over a dozen bands across three days. Another highlight is Ross James Electric Deadgrass, featuring Nicki Bluhm alongside Garrett Sayers of the Motet, Alex Koford, and Bill McKay. Hoffman and Nershi join them as special guests on that bill.

The immediate draw for locals, however, is the ticket giveaway. Agave’s Thursday night event offers discounted tickets to the festival, free swag, and a chance to win passes without paying service fees. For anyone planning to attend the Avon event, skipping the pre-party means missing a direct line to those tickets.

The bluegrass community is tight-knit, Moudy noted, with frequent collaborations between established acts. The lineup reflects that network of friendships and musical respect.
