A modular house detached from a semi-truck and blocked both lanes of Highway 62 at mile marker 9 near Dallas Divide, causing significant delays for commuters heading west from Ridgway.

"A modular house fell off a semi-truck Friday morning, blocking both lanes of Highway 62 at mile marker 9, approximately 4 miles west of Dallas Divide."
That’s the lead from the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, and it captures the sheer absurdity of the morning commute for anyone heading west out of Ridgway or toward Placerville. By 6:55 a.m., that pre-fab home had detached from its flatbed trailer, leaving a multi-ton chunk of modern housing sitting squarely in the middle of the valley’s main artery.
The question locals were asking by 7:30 a.m. wasn’t just "when will it be fixed?" but "why did it fall off?"
The Colorado State Patrol arrived on the scene at 7:27 a.m. to take the lead on the crash investigation. As of this afternoon, they haven’t said. There’s no press release about a snapped strap, a brake failure, or a driver error. There’s just the fact that a crane is currently traveling from Montrose to lift the house back onto the pavement, and the highway remains a parking lot.
No injuries were reported. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the highway is effectively closed, and the Sheriff’s Office estimates it won’t reopen until later this afternoon. But "later this afternoon" is a vague promise when you’re sitting in a truck cab on County Road 56V, watching the clock tick past 9:43 a.m.
The situation deteriorated quickly. Initial hopes at 8:05 a.m. were for alternating one-lane traffic. That plan died by 9:15 a.m. Officials determined that moving the house safely required closing both lanes entirely. Safety issues trumped convenience. You can’t have a crane swinging a modular home over moving traffic, so they stopped the traffic.
The route guidance is specific, which suggests they’ve thought this through, even if the delay is frustrating. If you’re heading from Placerville to Ridgway, the instructions are to turn right onto County Road 56V (Green Meadows Lane) at the fourth mile marker. From there, turn left onto County Road 58P to get back on Highway 62. It’s a detour, but it’s a known detour.
For those coming the other way, from Ridgway to Placerville, the route is to turn left onto County Road 58P at mile marker 11. From there, you can either turn right onto County Road 56V or continue on County Road 58P all the way to Highway 145 in Sawpit. It’s a loop, but it keeps you moving.
The crane is still a few hours away as of mid-morning. The CSP is leading the investigation, but the cause remains a mystery. Was it a securing issue? A mechanical failure? We don’t know yet. What we do know is that for the folks living along Highway 62, the morning commute just got a lot longer, and the afternoon rush might be delayed by the same logistics problem.
The numbers back up the disruption: half the house fell off at the ninth mile marker, which is roughly 9 miles east of Placerville. That’s not a minor fender-bender. That’s a major infrastructure event. The Sheriff’s Office is keeping a close watch on the clearance operation, but until that crane lifts the house, the road is closed.
It’s a reminder that even in an age of modular construction and efficient logistics, things still fall off trucks. The house is still there. The crane is still coming. And the drivers are still waiting.
