Western Slope Weekend Offers Murder Mystery, Dueling Pianos, and Ghost Walks

That is the promise of Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Rifle Elks Lodge, where locals will don their best 1883 attire for a silent auction and a dinner that includes dessert. The Post Independent reported that tickets are $34, with alcoholic drinks available for purchase. It is a specific kind of fun: the kind that requires you to commit to the bit, even if your 1883 costume is just a bandana and a suspicious amount of confidence.

That same evening, the energy shifts down the valley to Rifle’s Ute Theater and Events Center. There, Dueling Pianos Official takes the stage from 8 to 10:30 p.m. The performance features signature productions like "Four Grands, Eight Hands," a high-energy spectacle that brings world-class entertainment to Colorado. Tickets range from $35 to $90, a price point that reflects the scale of the production.

Up in Glenwood Springs, the mountain is doing its own thing. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is hosting "Octoberfest" (yes, with a 't') on the mountain. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 19, and again on Sept. 26, Oct. 3, and Oct. 10. The lineup includes live music by The Alpine Echo Band, German-inspired food, and seasonal craft beers. The weekend winds down in Carbondale on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with a movie night that feels less like cinema and more like a reunion for the cult-classic faithful. KDNK is presenting "School of Rock" at the Crystal Theatre from 7 to 9 p.m. Jack Black returns as Dewey Finn, that overly enthusiastic guitarist who gets thrown out of his bar band and poses as a substitute music teacher at an elite private elementary school. He exposes his students to the hard rock gods he idolizes, a plot point that still lands with the force of a distorted guitar amp. Tickets are $20 for KDNK members and $25 for non-members.

The week’s musical depth arrives Wednesday, Sept. 23, and Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Old Thompson Barn in Carbondale. The Schubert MiniFest brings together seven acclaimed musicians from the Roaring Fork Valley and across the nation. Through music and storytelling, four distinctive programs explore the song cycles and chamber music of Franz Schubert. The event reveals why Schubert’s deeply human artistry continues to captivate audiences nearly two centuries later. Tickets range from $40 to $200, a tiered cost that likely reflects the intimacy of the Old Thompson Barn setting.

The calendar closes with a chill in the air and a whisper in the dark. The 26th annual History Ghost Walk, a fundraiser for the Glenwood Springs Historical Society, takes place at historic Linwood Cemetery. Start times begin at 6:30 p.m., leading visitors through the grounds where history and legend blur.
