City of Durango crews are assessing infrastructure damage and clearing roads after regional flooding, urging residents to stay home while emergency responders prioritize vulnerable populations.

Durango, CO: **The City of Durango advises residents that municipal crews are deployed across the community to assess infrastructure damage and coordinate response efforts after recent regional flooding.

To safely get the city back up and running, our public works crews are prioritizing major arterial roads and high-priority transit corridors. Operational teams are systematically inspecting all elements of Durango’s vital infrastructure, including sewer networks, municipal water systems, and structural road integrity. However, the primary operational focus remains on aggressively clearing debris, mud, and hazards from roads to ensure a clear path for emergency vehicles.

To maximize the reach and efficiency of these resources, the City of Durango is coordinating with La Plata County and Colorado state agencies. Officials recognize the severe disruption this event has caused and deeply appreciate everyone's patience, resilience, and cooperation. La Plata County’s Office of Emergency Management is the lead agency coordinating local communication regarding flood conditions. Please visit www.lpcgov.org for additional information, or call 970-385-8700. Critical Guidance for Residents:

  • Stay home and off the roads: All residents are strongly urged to stay home while active recovery work is underway. Minimizing civilian traffic on local roadways prevents gridlock and ensures that heavy machinery can clear essential corridors safely and efficiently.

  • Support for Vulnerable Populations: Emergency responders are actively prioritizing assistance, medical check-ins, and evacuations for the city's most vulnerable residents. Keeping roads clear directly assists first responders in reaching those in critical need.

  • Exercise Extreme Caution: If travel is absolutely unavoidable, treat any standing water with extreme caution. Turn around, don't drown. Keep clear of downed overhead power lines, leaning utility poles, and roadside debris piles.

  • Call for help: Continue to use 911 for emergencies. For non-emergencies call 970-385-2900.
