RIFLE, CO – In coordination with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the seven fire districts in Garfield County, the City of Rifle has resumed Stage One Fire Restrictions effective last Friday, September 4, 2026. The fire danger is still high but less than it was for the past several weeks when we were under Stage Two Restrictions. These restrictions apply throughout the City of Rifle and to all of Garfield County.
Under Stage One Fire Restrictions:
Fireworks are prohibited. Professional fireworks displays may be permitted through an approved permitting process.
All burn permits are canceled or postponed until further notice.
Campfires are only permitted in designated fire grates within developed areas, including permanent in-ground containment structures or commercially manufactured fire pits. Temporary fire pans and rock campfire rings are not allowed.
Fires of any kind, including charcoal fires, are prohibited in undeveloped areas.
Smoking is only permitted within enclosed vehicles or buildings, designated smoking areas, developed areas, or areas free of combustible materials.
The use of fireworks, exploding targets, tracer rounds, and other explosive materials is prohibited.
Individuals conducting welding operations or using acetylene torches and other open-flame equipment are encouraged to follow industry safety practices and clear surrounding vegetation and combustible materials before beginning work.
For the purposes of these restrictions, a Developed Area is a groomed, landscaped, or irrigated area where vegetation is regularly maintained by the property owner, including residential neighborhoods, business districts, parks, and improved recreational areas.
An Undeveloped Area includes lands where vegetation is allowed to grow naturally, such as open space, non-landscaped parklands, greenbelts, and other areas determined by the authority having jurisdiction to present an elevated wildfire hazard.
The City of Rifle appreciates the community’s cooperation and commitment to protecting lives, property, and natural resources during this period of heightened wildfire risk.
