Frequently Asked Questions
What's Rifle known for?
Rifle is a working town that doubles as a jumping-off point for some of the best public land on the Western Slope. It grew up on mining and energy, and that's still in its DNA, but these days the draw is what's outside town. Think of it as a base camp more than a destination in itself.
What can I do outdoors near Rifle?
There's hiking, biking, fishing, and camping within easy reach. Rifle Falls State Park and Rifle Gap State Park are both close, and beyond them you've got the White River National Forest and the Flat Tops Wilderness. The Flat Tops in particular are underrated and tend to be empty compared to the big-name Colorado spots.
Is Rifle Falls worth seeing?
Yes, and it doesn't take long. Rifle Falls State Park has three waterfalls dropping over limestone, set close enough together that you can walk the whole thing in an afternoon. There are trails and camping if you want to stay longer, but even a quick stop is worth it.
How do I get to Rifle?
Rifle sits right on I-70, so driving is simplest. It's about three hours west of Denver and roughly an hour east of Grand Junction, where the nearest commercial airport is. You can also catch a shuttle from Denver if you'd rather not drive the mountains yourself.
