LA PLATA COUNTY SHERIFF LIFTS COUNTYWIDE ROAD CLOSURE; RESIDENTS URGED TO STAY HOME AS DANGEROUS CONDITIONS PERSIST
La Plata County, Colo - La Plata County Sheriff Sean Smith has lifted the countywide road closure; however, hazardous road conditions and widespread damage remain. Sheriff’s deputies and Road and Bridge Division supervisors are continuing to assess closed and damaged roads, and the full extent of the impact is not yet known. Residents are strongly urged to stay home and avoid all nonessential travel. Anyone who must travel for urgent needs should use extreme caution, expect closures and damaged roadways, and never attempt to enter a closed area. A road-closure list follows, but residents should be aware that it does not include every affected road.
Driving Safety Message: Never drive through standing or moving water, even if it appears shallow. Water can conceal washed-out pavement and culverts, unstable road edges, and other hazards, and it may move a vehicle off the roadway. Do not drive over, around, or through debris, including rocks, mud, branches, or downed utility lines. Turn around, keep a safe distance, and use a confirmed safe alternate route. When in doubt, do not proceed. Avoid driving on mud-covered roads whenever possible. Slick mud can cause sudden loss of steering and braking control.
