GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — As our community prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the Grand Junction Fire Department is reminding residents that Stage 2 Fire Restrictions remain in effect throughout Mesa County, and the use of all personal fireworks is prohibited.
This year's City of Grand Junction Fourth of July fireworks show has been postponed out of respect for the three wildland firefighters who lost their lives in the Snyder Fire and the ongoing demands placed on regional fire resources. While the traditional fireworks display will not take place, there are still many opportunities for families to safely celebrate the holiday.
The Fourth of July Parade will proceed as scheduled in downtown Grand Junction, Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool will offer $2.50 admission in honor of America's 250th birthday, and the Grand Junction Razorback Suckers will host a Fourth of July baseball game, providing a fun and family-friendly way to celebrate the holiday.
"We understand that fireworks have long been part of Fourth of July traditions," said Fire Chief Pete Skeris. "However, the hot, dry, and windy conditions we are experiencing have created an extreme fire danger throughout our region. We ask everyone to help protect our community by respecting the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions and abstaining from the personal use of fireworks."
Stage 2 Fire Restrictions prohibit:
Personal fireworks.
Campfires, charcoal grills, wood-burning fire pits, chimineas, tiki torches, and other open flames.
Burning debris or vegetation without a permit.
Smoking outside of an enclosed vehicle or building, except within the City of Grand Junction in an area at least 10 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of combustible materials.
Driving or parking off established roads where vegetation is within 10 feet of a vehicle.
Tracer rounds, explosive targets, and most welding operations involving an open flame.
The following remain permitted:
- Propane or gas grills, stoves, lanterns, and gas fire pits equipped with an on/off valve when used at least three feet from combustible materials.
The Grand Junction Fire Department also encourages residents to take additional precautions by never parking vehicles on dry grass, ensuring trailer safety chains are properly secured to prevent sparks, and properly extinguishing and disposing of smoking materials.
Recent wildfires have demonstrated just how quickly a single spark can become a fast-moving fire that threatens homes, businesses, natural resources, and lives. Every resident plays an important role in reducing the risk of wildfire.
The Grand Junction Police Department will have increased patrol to address calls for service during the holiday weekend. Individuals found using fireworks may be cited and face criminal charges. The 4th of July is one of the busiest nights of the year for our 911 dispatchers, and we encourage residents to call the non-emergency dispatch line at 970-242-6707 for non-emergency related calls, leaving the 911 line free for emergencies.
