Montrose, CO — With the conclusion of chip seal operations this week, contractors working for the City of Montrose will begin slurry sealing roadways across the city on Monday, July 6. The remaining project will last approximately three more weeks. Please see the attached maps for the tentative slurry seal schedule, pending any weather or equipment delays.
Roads that were recently chip-sealed will also appear on the slurry seal schedule to receive their final treatment, creating a pavement maintenance system called a cape seal.
Slurry seal is a type of surface treatment in which small aggregate is suspended in an oil/water emulsion. As the emulsion cures, it creates a smooth black seal on the asphalt pavement. Slurry seals are best used on roads that are still in good condition, prior to any major failures.
The seal helps prevent roadways from deteriorating, thus extending the life of the asphalt and preventing the need for more costly repairs in the future. The curing period typically takes four to five hours. During this period, cars will not be permitted to drive on the freshly placed slurry. Residential roads will be closed to all traffic during this period, unless indicated otherwise on the accompanying map. Minor arterials or long cul-de-sacs such as 6530 Rd, Lilac Rd, 6600 Rd, 6650 Rd, Locust Rd, 6700 Rd, Miami Rd, Woodgate Rd, and segments of Deer Trail Rd, Mesa Vista, Heather Ln, Laurel Ln, and Iris Ct will remain open to one-lane traffic and will be controlled through the use of flaggers or pilot cars during the curing period. Access to adjacent businesses will be maintained to the greatest extent possible.
Contractors will begin work at 7 a.m. each day. If a road is scheduled for slurry sealing and has "No Parking" signs along it, please be prepared for the road to be closed until the slurry has cured.
Residents who need to leave their home after 7 a.m. should prepare for the closure and relocate their vehicle to a street without "No Parking" signs prior to the start of the slurry seal process. If a delay occurs, roads that were not completed on the originally scheduled day will be added to the work list for the following day unless otherwise posted.
Trash and recycling collection schedules will remain unchanged throughout the project. If your trash or recycling is scheduled for collection on the same day as the surface treatment project, please ensure your can is out no later than 6 a.m., as these areas will be collected first for the day.
