**UPDATE: **The original chip schedule has been delayed by one day. Work will now begin on Wednesday, June 24, and extend through Monday, June 29. The chip seal days shown on the accompanying map have been adjusted accordingly.
Contractors working for the City of Montrose will begin chip sealing and slurry sealing roadways across the city on Tuesday, June 23. The project will last approximately three weeks, pending any delays. Chip seals will begin first, followed by slurry seals. Please see the accompanying map for the tentative chip seal schedule. Slurry seals are tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, July 6, with additional information on locations and scheduling to follow.
Chip seal is a type of surface treatment that consists of a single application of liquid asphalt that is then covered with aggregate. Traffic can return to the roadway after the cover aggregate has been rolled into the liquid asphalt, typically within a few minutes. Chip seals are used in conjunction with slurry seals on higher-traffic roads or those that show higher levels of wear than are suitable for a slurry seal. These roads will also appear on the slurry seal schedules.
Slurry seal is a type of surface treatment in which small aggregate is suspended in an oil/water emulsion. As the emulsion cures, it creates a smooth black seal on top of the asphalt pavement. Slurry seals are best used on roads that are still in good condition. The seal helps prevent the roadway from deteriorating, extending the life of the asphalt and preventing more costly repairs in the future. The curing period typically takes 4 to 5 hours, during which time cars are not permitted to drive on the freshly placed slurry. Residential roads will be closed to all traffic during the curing period. Minor arterials such as 6530 Rd, 6600 Rd, 6650 Rd, Locust Rd, 6700 Rd, Miami Rd, 6720 Rd, and Woodgate Rd will remain open to one-lane traffic and will be controlled using flaggers or a pilot car through the curing period.
Contractors will begin work each day at 7 a.m. If a road is scheduled for slurry sealing and has "No Parking" signs along the road, please be prepared for the road to be closed until the slurry has cured.
Residents who live along the project roadways and who need to leave their homes after 7 a.m. should prepare for the closure by relocating their vehicles to a street that does not have "No Parking" signs prior to the start of the slurry seal process. Roads that were not completed on the originally scheduled day will be added to the following day's work list whenever possible.
Trash and recycling collection schedules will remain unchanged throughout the project. If road work and collections for a project area are scheduled for the same day, residents should ensure that their receptacles are placed for collection no later than 6 a.m., as these areas will be collected first.
