Bangs Canyon Trailhead (Mica Mine)

The Bangs Canyon Trailhead, located south of Grand Junction, provides access to the Mica Mine Trail, a moderate hike ending at a historic mica and quartz mine. The trail begins with a steep descent featuring large rock steps, then levels out to follow the floor of Ladder Canyon. The route is wide, easy to follow, and approximately 2.6 miles out-and-back. Hikers pass through a riparian zone shaded by cottonwoods and bordered by willows, sagebrush, and wild roses, set against red sandstone cliffs. The trail ends at the old mine site, where a cave with mica-covered walls can be explored with minor scrambling. Parking is available, and the trail is pet-friendly. The area is part of the BLM Bangs Canyon Special Recreation Management Area.
