The East Fork Trailhead serves as the access point for two distinct trails in the Gunnison area, requiring careful verification of location before departure. The primary East Fork Trail #228, located in the White River National Forest near Montrose, begins at the end of Forest Service Road #863. This trail follows an old mining road along the East Fork Cimarron River, staying within the Uncompquagre Wilderness boundary. It offers a gentle grade through meadow and timber for approximately 2 miles before remaining in timber for another 4 miles. The trail eventually intersects with Middle Fork Trail #227 at 8.3 miles and ends at the Ridge Stock Driveway Trail. Amenities include parking and bathrooms, but no water is available at the trailhead. The elevation reaches 12,200 feet. A second, distinct East Fork Trail is located 38 miles southwest of Gunnison near Powderhorn. This trail follows the East Fork of Powderhorn Creek, rising 1,300 feet over 5 miles with a total roundtrip distance of 11.1 miles. This route features lush vegetation, abundant beaver ponds, and open meadows. It is an intermediate hike taking 6 to 7 hours, with a trailhead elevation of 9,300 feet. Four-wheel drive or high clearance vehicles may be necessary for the road leading to the Powderhorn trailhead. Both trails are suitable for fall hiking, though the Powderhorn trail is noted for June through October use.
