Hovenweep National Monument, Holly Unit, is a moderate hiking destination located near Pleasant View on the Western Slope. The site preserves six prehistoric structures built between 1200 and 1300 CE, including multistory towers perched on canyon rims and balanced on boulders. The Holly Group Trail offers a route through this high desert landscape, characterized by sandstone and shale formations. Hikers can view native flora such as juniper, sage, and yucca alongside the stone ruins. The typical duration for this hike is approximately 2 hours, with an elevation of 5,343 feet. Parking is available on site, and the trail is pet friendly. The monument is open year-round. Summer temperatures often reach 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter months may bring snow and ice. Camping is permitted within the monument, though it requires a reservation. The area is also recognized as an International Dark Sky Park.
