About
Guide's Ridge Technical Summit Route is a difficult, technical hiking and climbing route on Mt. Crested Butte, reaching an elevation of 12,141 to 12,162 feet. The route covers approximately 7 miles with 3,300 feet of elevation gain, typically taking about 5 hours to complete. The terrain transitions from Class 1 uphill hiking to mixed Class 3 and 4 terrain, featuring exposed Class 5 moves near the summit. The ridge is short but offers significant exposure, requiring experience and a helmet for potential rockfall. Access begins at the free public parking area at the Mount Crested Butte Resort. Hikers can ascend to the Silver Queen Lift via the service road, mountain bike trails, or by paying for the lift if in season. The route starts on a small trail to the right of the lift, marked by a stick on the ridge. Views from the summit include the town of Crested Butte and surrounding valleys. The standard descent is Class 2 to Class 1, returning to the lift or the car. The route is accessible year-round, though winter conditions require additional gear and expertise.
