The trail spans approximately 5 miles roundtrip from the upper trailhead, with an elevation gain of roughly 2,900 feet. Hikers typically complete the route in 3 to 8 hours depending on pace and chosen path. The standard route ascends the South Slopes and Lavender Couloir, offering a class 2+ climb that is steep but less technical. An alternative option involves a scramble up the Southwest Ridge, which is solid rock but rated class 3 and may require a helmet. The trailhead is located off US 550, accessible by two-wheel-drive vehicles on the dirt road to Yankee Boy Basin. Parking is available at the upper trailhead, which sits near 12,400 feet. The area is part of the Mount Sneffels Wilderness within Uncompahgre National Forest. Hikers should prepare for variable weather, including potential snow or ice near the summit, and bring sufficient water, food, and sun protection.
