Rifle Falls State Park in Rifle, Colorado, offers a moderate 1.5-mile hike at an elevation of 6,100 feet, ideal for fall visits from September through November. The park features three distinct trails: the Coyote Trail, which is ADA accessible to the base of the falls; the Squirrel Trail, a 1.5-mile partly ADA accessible route; and the Bobcat Trail, a 1-mile non-paved option. The main attraction is a 70-foot triple waterfall formed by limestone cliffs, created when the town’s hydroelectric plant altered East Rifle Creek’s flow in 1910. Lush vegetation kept moist by the waterfall spray creates a tropical-like environment. Visitors can explore limestone caves behind the falls, which have been a tourist attraction since 1884. The trail to the base is paved and handicap accessible, while other paths are non-paved. Parking is available, though it can be limited during peak seasons. Restrooms and ten picnic sites are located throughout the park near the waterfalls and trails. The area is pet-friendly on most trails, although dogs are not permitted in the adjacent state wildlife area. Typical hiking duration is about two hours.
