The Smith Mountain River Overlook is a 2.4-mile moderate mountain biking trail located in Delta County, Colorado, within the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. The route begins at the Smith Mountain Staging Area, approximately 10 miles east of downtown Delta and near Orchard City. It is a dead-end trail that heads northeast along a low-traffic Jeep road to the summit of Smith Mountain. The surface is primarily hard-packed dirt, with rocky sections on the initial climbs and flat-to-slow-rise terrain for the remainder of the ascent. Riders encounter two distinct climbs near the start, followed by a steady grade to the end. The trail offers continuous views of the Gunnison River, Orchard City, and the Adobe Badlands from a high vantage point. A pullout near the two-mile mark provides an early view of the river. The trailhead features easy parking, and pets are allowed. The typical riding duration is about one hour, with an elevation of 5,631 feet. The trail is accessible from April through October, though conditions can vary with weather and maintenance. It is suitable for riders with some experience, including families and those on eBikes.
