About
The Sunset Rocks Alternate Trail is a moderate 0.81-mile hiking route located near Olathe and Delta on the Western Slope of Colorado. The trail begins in a clearly marked parking lot labeled Sunset Rocks and ascends to mesa top almost immediately. Hikers follow the path for approximately one mile to a T intersection, where they turn right toward the Sidewinder Trail junction. The route returns via the same path to the T intersection, then continues straight for about half a mile to exit near the trailhead. This creates an irregular loop shape described as an "odd lollipop." A fork near the start offers a short detour to a cave off the trail. The trailhead is accessible by car, though the connecting road conditions are noted as not great. Parking is available at the trailhead with no fee required for day use on BLM land. The elevation reaches 4,959 feet with minimal gain. Vegetation includes juniper and sagebrush. The trail is used by hikers, runners, and bikers, and allows off-leash dogs. Summer temperatures can be high, making shoulder seasons preferable for comfort.
