About

Suncliff Canyon is a hiking trail in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area near Delta, Colorado. The trail begins along South River Road and follows a shallow canyon for approximately two miles. It is generally considered an easy to moderate hike, suitable for families. The route starts in a wash and climbs out toward higher ground, staying within the canyon floor for most of the distance. The surface is a mix of sand and shale, which can be loose but remains firm enough for walking. Hikers may see mountain sheep and small reptiles along the trail. Notable features include visible dinosaur tracks, which are casts of ancient footprints found on rocks past the quarter-mile mark. These tracks are fragile and require care to avoid damage. The trailhead offers a small, unmarked gravel parking area with buried pipe wheel stops, located about 20 yards from the road. Parking is available, and restrooms are present at the trailhead according to some sources. The area allows hiking, dogs, and horses but does not permit bikes or motorcycles. Cell service is limited to zero or two bars. The trail is open year-round, with some sources noting it as a good option during the fall season from September through November. Total length varies by source, ranging from 1.7 miles to 4 miles round trip, with an elevation range between 5,290 and 5,876 feet.
