Delta Shuts Out Aspen 42-0 in Western Slope League Opener

Aspen —Aspen High School football lost its Class 2A Western Slope League opener on Friday night, falling 42-0 to Delta.

The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in Division 2A entering the week by CHSAANow.com, dominated on the AHS turf. They improved their record to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. Aspen, which holds a 1-2 record, drops to 0-1 in the WSL.

The shutout was decisive. Delta’s Max Lockhart, a key player for the Panthers, ran against Aspen’s defense throughout the night. Across the valley, Basalt High School had a very different night. The Longhorns beat Gunnison 47-7 at home, bouncing back from a tough loss to Eagle Valley in their home opener the previous week. BHS improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in WSL play. The team has a bye this week before traveling to Pagosa Springs on Sept. 26.

The league standings are taking shape quickly among the seven 2A schools. Delta’s performance solidifies its status as a presumptive favorite. Meanwhile, the Pirates beat Montezuma-Cortez 47-27 in their own WSL opener. Coal Ridge, the only other team not to play a league game this week, sits at 1-2 after a 41-20 non-league loss to Meeker on Friday. The Titans will get WSL play underway with a trip to Montezuma-Cortez on Sept. 18.

In Division 3A, the picture is grim for Glenwood Springs. The Demons fell to 0-4 overall following a 48-7 loss at Conifer on Friday. They play at Summit, who are 2-1, this coming Friday.

The contrast between Aspen and Basalt highlights the volatility of early-season football on the Western Slope. One team is searching for its first league win, while the other is building momentum with a decisive victory. For Aspen fans watching from the stands on the AHS turf, the 42-0 scoreline is a hard pill to swallow. The question now is whether the Skiers can adjust before facing Gunnison, a team that just lost to both Aspen’s rivals in the league.
