Durango, CO: **The City of Durango invites residents to attend upcoming public meetings and offer feedback as part of the 10-year update to the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

The document is the foundation of the planning process and was last modified in 2017. It guides decisions about growth, housing, transportation, infrastructure, sustainability, and the overall quality of life in Durango. The plan supports all areas of the City’s 2024 Strategic Plan and will complement its efforts to ensure coordinated, long‑term decision‑making.

There will be many opportunities for public input in the coming weeks and months. Attendees are requested to sign up for the listening sessions in advance through the Engage Durango webpage, but no one will be turned away:

  • Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Catacombs Fitness,1162 Main Ave.

The update is driven by changing community conditions, new state requirements related to housing, water supply, and growth, and the need to align citywide plans and policies. It also presents an opportunity to create a renewed shared vision for Durango’s future.

The update will feature two phases. Phase I focuses on building a strong foundation through data gathering, a comprehensive audit of existing plans, and inclusive community engagement. This includes listening sessions, multi‑day visioning events, focus groups, and a detailed Community Engagement Plan. Phase I will result in a confirmed community vision and a clear understanding of key issues and opportunities.

Phase II will translate that vision into action through policy development, scenario planning, mapping, and drafting a visually engaging, accessible Comprehensive Plan. This phase will address growth, water supply, infrastructure, and connectivity, and will produce an updated Future Land Use Map, Three‑Mile Plan, policies, and implementation tools.

The city is partnering with Logan Simpson, a planning firm with strong regional experience, to lead this effort. Community participation will remain central throughout the process, with surveys, workshops, open houses, and online tools available to ensure broad engagement.

A recent report card for the 2017 plan shows that of the plan’s 31 recommended strategies, 65% have been completed or are actively underway, and 35% have not yet started, many of which involve neighborhood‑specific Character District plans.
