Animas River Trail Closure Between Animas City Park and Oxbow Preserve Parking Lot for Erosion Following Flooding
The City of Durango Parks and Recreation Department is closing a section of the Animas River Trail between Animas City Park and the Oxbow Park and Preserve parking lot and a section of the trail has been undermined by river flow, creating unsafe conditions for trail users. The closure is necessary to protect public safety while the extent of the flood damage is assessed. Trail users are asked to avoid the closed section and use alternate routes until further notice. Please respect all posted closure signs and barricades. The City will provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the trail's condition and plans for reopening.
Be Mindful on Trails and in Open Spaces
Recent flooding has left its mark on parts of our local trail system, parks and open spaces, and we’re still assessing the damage. Our team is working to identify areas that need attention while working on repairs at the same time. We can’t be everywhere at once, so if you’re out on the trails and notice erosion, damaged sections, poor trail conditions or other issues, please report them through SeeClickFix Durango. Community eyes and reports help us identify problems and prioritize work as we continue assessing flood impacts.
As you explore, please be mindful of posted closures, avoid damaged and closed areas and keep safety in mind as top priority!

Winter Wildlife Closures Start December 1
Each winter, local land management agencies work together on seasonal wildlife closures in the Durango area to help protect mule deer, elk and other wildlife as they move to lower elevations in search of food and shelter during winter conditions.
Winter wildlife closures are in effect December 1 through April 30 and affect Grandview Ridge, Animas City Mountain, Twin Buttes Open Space and Bodo State Wildlife Area. To view seasonal wildlife closures throughout the region and state, visit the Bureau of Land Management’s COTREX map at BLM.gov.
