Acerca deEl pueblo
Crested Butte is Colorado's wildflower capital, and the annual wildflower festival is built around the alpine meadows and the range of ecosystems that produce them. About 1,500 people live in town. It stays small and it takes its recreation seriously, which is the combination that keeps bringing people back.
Sitting in the heart of the Elk Mountains puts Colorado's alpine terrain right at the edge of town. Gunnison National Forest is close by with hiking trails, mountain biking routes, and camping, and the lakes and streams in the area cover fishing and water recreation.
The West Elk Wilderness nearby is where people go for backpacking and longer trips off the road system, and the trail systems around town run from flat nature walks to hard mountain routes. Protecting that land and the access to it has been a local priority for a long time.
The historic downtown district has shops and restaurants in older buildings that carry the area's heritage, and the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum nearby covers the region's past. The same instinct that protects the land applies to the buildings on the main street.
Crested Butte pulls visitors from well outside Colorado for the recreation and the alpine scenery, and the mountain character it has held onto is what separates it from other towns its size.
The alpine meadows around town fill in with wildflowers in summer, and there are a lot of them, which is how Crested Butte ended up with the wildflower title. The state actually recognized it as the wildflower capital of Colorado. Mid to late summer is when the meadows are at their best.
It runs in summer, when the flowers are out, and it's been going for years. The festival is built around guided hikes, photography workshops, and talks about the local plants and ecosystems. If you want a spot on the popular hikes, book early because they fill up.
The mountain biking is the thing people talk about most, and the town has a long history with the sport. Trails run straight into the Gunnison National Forest and toward the West Elk Wilderness from there. The fishing and camping are good too if biking isn't your speed.
It started as a coal mining town, and that past still shows in the old buildings downtown. The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum lays out the mining story and how the place turned into a ski and bike town. The main street has held onto its character better than most.
You'll come in on Highway 135, which runs up from Gunnison about an hour to the south. From Denver it's roughly 4 hours. The nearest airport is the Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport, and shuttles run from Denver if you don't want to make the drive yourself.
