Acerca deEl pueblo
Rifle is a historic town of about 10,000 people that grew up on mining and the energy industry and now sends most of its visitors out to the public land around it. The recreation is the draw more than the town itself, and locals will usually tell you that first.
Rifle Falls State Park is the closest thing to a marquee attraction. Three waterfalls drop over limestone cliffs into a natural amphitheater, which makes it a favorite for photography and for people who want a short walk with a payoff at the end. The park's trail system covers hiking at every skill level, and Rifle Gap State Park nearby handles the fishing and boating.
Sitting at the base of the White River National Forest gives the town easy access to a lot of Colorado's alpine terrain. The trail systems around Rifle run from flat nature walks to hard mountain routes, and the Flat Tops Wilderness Area is where people go for backpacking and longer trips off the road system.
The historic downtown district has shops and restaurants in older buildings that carry the area's heritage, and the Rifle Creek Golf Course gives you a round in mountain terrain. The town has been deliberate about protecting both the natural resources and the recreational access that come with them.
Rifle's reputation as an outdoor recreation town keeps growing among people looking for adventure and quiet in the same trip, and its position makes it a practical base for the rest of the Western Slope.
Rifle is a working town that doubles as a jumping-off point for some of the best public land on the Western Slope. It grew up on mining and energy, and that's still in its DNA, but these days the draw is what's outside town. Think of it as a base camp more than a destination in itself.
There's hiking, biking, fishing, and camping within easy reach. Rifle Falls State Park and Rifle Gap State Park are both close, and beyond them you've got the White River National Forest and the Flat Tops Wilderness. The Flat Tops in particular are underrated and tend to be empty compared to the big-name Colorado spots.
Yes, and it doesn't take long. Rifle Falls State Park has three waterfalls dropping over limestone, set close enough together that you can walk the whole thing in an afternoon. There are trails and camping if you want to stay longer, but even a quick stop is worth it.
Rifle sits right on I-70, so driving is simplest. It's about three hours west of Denver and roughly an hour east of Grand Junction, where the nearest commercial airport is. You can also catch a shuttle from Denver if you'd rather not drive the mountains yourself.
